Teacher Rally!

CT_state_capitol_tower_&_domePlease plan now to attend next Thursday’s Teachers’ Rally, (May 18th), on the north lawn of the State Capitol in Hartford, beginning at 5:00 PM.  There will not be any buses supplied by the WHEA, but there is ample parking in the area.  Included here is a link to information provided by the CEA, as well as a map of Hartford for your convenience.

There are many buses available to you departing from locations around the state.  When you go to register you will find these locations listed.

The rally is the same night as our recognition dinner so

those attending the dinner may not be able to go to the rally.  However, this should not diminish the rally’s importance for WeHa teachers.  It will be a visible demonstration of opposition to Governor Malloy’s Pension Debt Shift scheme.  Shifting teacher pension payments onto the towns will cause all towns to think twice before raising teacher salaries during future negotiations because it will be a double cost to towns to do so.  As salaries rise, so does the town’s pension obligation.  Early career teachers…this could potentially affect you the most.

Our local budget (and many other towns’) was passed based upon the assumption that much of what the governor proposed will not happen.  But the state budget is still not finalized and no one is quite sure which way things will go.  Please make every effort to attend.  The battle is not over.
